What is a sacred journal bucket?
A “sacred bucket” is Journal Genie’s name for how your journal is handled: private by default and structurally excluded from the AI until you explicitly opt a specific entry in. Past entries are never bulk-included, and there is no background process reading your journal. The default is silence — you decide, one entry at a time, what your AI gets to see.
In Journal Genie, the journal is a “sacred bucket”: private by default and structurally excluded from the AI until you opt a specific entry in, with past entries never bulk-included.
A journal is the most personal thing many people will ever type into software. The usual bargain — “write here, and by the way the AI learns from it” — is exactly wrong for that surface.
So Journal Genie treats the journal differently on purpose, and gave the treatment a name. The “sacred bucket” is the rule that your journal is off-limits to the AI by default, and stays off-limits until you make a deliberate choice to include a specific entry.
Private by default, not by promise
A new journal entry is created private. The AI does not read it, Genie mode does not reason over it, and nothing about it enters your AI’s context — not because we promise to be careful, but because the entry is excluded by default at the data layer. The notebook surface is source-only; the journal is separate.
You opt in one entry at a time
To bring a journal entry into your AI’s reasoning, you include it explicitly — per entry. There is no single switch that hands your whole journal to the AI, and past entries are never bulk-included. That constraint is deliberate: the sacred bucket protects you from an accidental all-at-once share.
Made legible, never weakened
Your data controls show the journal as sacred and not used by default, and mark exactly which entries you have opted in. The point is transparency without a dark pattern: you can always see the boundary, and the boundary never quietly moves.
The honest fine print
- Opting an entry in does share it with your AI. The sacred bucket protects the default and prevents accidental bulk sharing; it does not override a choice you deliberately make to include an entry.
- This is a privacy-and-ownership design, not a clinical or therapeutic feature. Journal Genie is a private space to write and think — if you are in crisis, please use a dedicated crisis line (we list several).
Questions, answered first.
What is a sacred journal bucket?
It is Journal Genie’s term for how the journal is handled: private by default and structurally excluded from the AI until you opt a specific entry in. Past entries are never bulk-included, and there is no background process reading your journal.
Can the AI read my journal without me including an entry?
No. The journal is excluded from AI reasoning by default. Genie mode reasons over a journal entry only when you explicitly include that entry, one at a time.
Is my journal used to train AI?
No. Journal entries are never used to train AI, never sold, and never shown ads against. They are isolated per user and encrypted in transit and at rest, and you can export or delete them yourself.
